Since losing her father, Katniss has kept her family alive by hunting in the woods with Gale and trading on the black market. When her sister Prim’s name is called in the reaping, Katniss takes her place. As a tribute in the Capitol, Katniss is a liability until her district partner Peeta casts them as star-crossed lovers. Initially suspicious of Peeta, Katniss gradually comes to trust him.

In the 74th arena, Katniss defies the Capitol’s rulebook to mourn the murder of a fellow tribute and then refuses to kill Peeta. Her final gambit saves their lives but unleashes new dangers.

On her Victory Tour, Katniss realizes no one will be safe until he is removed from power. Throughout the 75th Games, Katniss cannot fathom why others risk their lives for her or rally to her side. In District 13, she is reunited with Gale and her family but separated from Peeta. Only with Prim’s encouragement is she convinced that as the Mockingjay she can help bring an end to the Capitol’s reign of terror. Still unable to play dress-up for Plutarch or obedient soldier for President Coin, Katniss pursues her own plans.

Defiant against cruelty but loyal to those she loves, Katniss survives by following her instincts most consequently as she turns her bow from Snow to Coin, a decision that finally brings freedom to Panem. After the war, Katniss endures the loss of Prim as she and Peeta move back to District 12 to heal and start a family.
