NOBODY EVER WINS THE GAMES. THERE ARE SURVIVORS, THERE’S NO WINNERS.

Haymitch and Katniss

As the lone surviving District 12 victor, Haymitch has spent the last twenty-three years watching his tributes killed in the arena. It’s taken a toll.

When Haymitch meets his new tributes, Katniss and Peeta, their determination to survive wakes him out of complacency. He admires Katniss’ guts and sees in Peeta’s confession a way to give them both a fighting chance. Promoting the “star-crossed lovers” narrative to sponsors and ultimately persuading the Gamemakers as well, Haymitch becomes the first mentor to help two victors survive the arena.

When Peeta takes his place in the Quarter Quell reaping, Haymitch is left to watch most of his fellow victors die in the arena. Haymitch’s work with the rebels gets Katniss safely to District 13, but his inability to protect Peeta prevents any sense of victory.

Persevering through alcohol withdrawal, Haymitch helps Plutarch’s propaganda team work with Katniss. Contentious as they may be, Haymitch and Katniss understand one another in unspoken ways and Haymitch follows her cue at the victor’s conference, voting “with the Mockingjay.”
